Peter Mohler, executive vice president for the Enterprise for Research, Innovation and Knowledge and chief scientific officer at the Wexner Medical Center, has been named the 30th president of the University of Alabama.
Ohio State EVP to lead University of Alabama

Peter has been a trusted colleague and friend. His counsel, candor, and unwavering dedication to our mission have made a profound difference. While we will miss him greatly, we know he will bring the same passion and excellence to the University of Alabama.
Mohler has been instrumental in elevating Ohio State’s research and innovation enterprise, leading to consecutive years of record-high annual research expenditures and providing transformative impact for the university and the broader Ohio community. Through strategic partnerships with industry leaders, community organizations, and government agencies, he has helped catalyze economic growth and strengthen community ties across the region and the state.
Mohler has been at Ohio State since 2011 when he was recruited to Columbus as the director of Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute and subsequently served as Chair of the Department of Physiology and Cell Biology and vice dean of research in the College of Medicine. Before his appointment as executive vice president, Mohler served as the university's vice president for research. He also was acting president of Ohio State in 2023.
With support from the Board of Trustees and in recognition of ERIK’s many successes, ERIK will remain a distinct entity reporting directly to Executive Vice President and Provost Ravi Bellamkonda following Mohler's departure in July. This new alignment will ensure strong collaboration under the unified leadership of the provost and in service to our academic and research enterprises. President Carter and Provost Bellamkonda are working on plans for interim leadership of ERIK and a search for permanent leadership.
