Julie P. Martin, PhD, FASEE

Assistant Vice President for Talent and Team Development

Julie P. Martin is Ohio State's assistant vice president for talent and team development, where she is responsible for building research leadership at the university and providing team and talent development training programs. In this role, Dr. Martin also oversees the STEAM Factory.

She joined Ohio State as an associate professor of engineering education in 2019 after serving as a program director in the Engineering Education and Centers Division at the National Science Foundation. Dr. Martin is an associate professor in the Department of Engineering Education, where she served as the associate department chair for graduate studies and research infrastructure from 2020-2022. As the principal investigator with the Elevate Research Group , her award-winning research on diversity, equity, and inclusion expands capacity for STEM fields to solve persistent challenges in broadening participation in STEM education by elevating the experiences, assets, and voices of traditionally marginalized groups. She is well-known for her NSF CAREER-sponsored research operationalizing social capital for engineering education and her more recent work on research capacity building via social capital developed in communities of practice and through mentorship. Dr. Martin has published more than 80 journal articles, peer-reviewed conference proceedings, and book chapters. She frequently speaks about asset-based approaches to making STEM  more inclusive and constructive peer review in academic publishing.

Dr. Martin has held a variety of national leadership positions in the Women in Engineering ProActive Network, including serving as its national president, and is a fellow with the American Society for Engineering Education. Martin is the editor-in-chief of Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering, where she is seeking to create a culture of constructive review for academic publishing. She has two degrees in Materials Science and Engineering – her BS from North Carolina State University and her PhD from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
